Charity Christmas cards – go local – buy with a conscience!
Posted by blackpoolcommunitynews on December 1, 2008
With the festive season fast approaching (24 days to go!) then those of us who buy Christmas cards, might opt to buy ethically and purchase charity cards from high street retailers. However the Guardian has this to say:
“When sending seasonal greetings, you may head straight for the charity Christmas cards in the likes of John Lewis, Marks & Spencer and Clinton Cards. But before you get too much of a glow, you should be aware that charities don’t do quite as well as you might think out of these products; some only get a small fraction of every pound spent for good causes… The amount donated to charity from the sale price can range from between 4 and 50 per cent, according to the Charities Advisory Trust, which runs its own ‘Scrooge Awards’ to expose some of the worst offenders.”
The Guardian article goes on to recommend lots of other ways that you can purchase ethical cards and gifts.
Of course locally you might opt to go directly to local charities to buy your Christmas ware. One supplier of cards – and you can guarantee that the monies are spent locally – is Blackpool Tiggers. The local leisure and support initiative for children on the autistic spectrum offers 24 cards for £5 – and each one is unique having been drawn by a young Tigger! If any other local charities want to share their ethical Christmas ware – then leave a comment with a link to the information.
