    Crackdown on alcohol in Blackpool

    Posted by blackpoolcommunitynews on December 5, 2008

    BLACKPOOL is to be specially targeted in a government crackdown on people who drink too much. The town has been picked out as among the six worst areas for alcohol problems in the North West reports the Blackpool Citizen.

    This follows the announcement by the government on Wednesday of a range of new measures to tackle alcohol fuelled crime and disorder. The Government will shortly consult on a range of compulsory conditions including:

    - banning offers like ‘all you can drink for £10′;
    - outlawing pubs and bars offering promotions to certain groups, such as women only;
    - ensuring that customers in supermarkets are not required to buy very large amounts of a product to take advantage of price discounts;
    - ensuring staff selling alcohol are properly trained;
    - requiring that consumers are able to see unit content of all alcohol when they buy it; and
    - requiring bars and pubs to have the minimum sized glasses available for customers who want them.

    Missing from the above list to the concern of some pressure groups, was the failure to curb the discounting of alcohol by the supermarkets. It is believed that the low-cost-high-alcohol deals in supermarkets directly appeal to binge and dependent drinkers.

    Would raising the price of alcohol be an effective way to reduce alcohol related harm?

    BBC NEWS | Health | NHS alcohol services ‘struggling’

    Posted by blackpoolcommunitynews on October 29, 2008

    The NHS is failing to get a grip on the growing alcohol problems in England, a watchdog says.

    The National Audit Office said local health bosses did not have a clear idea of the scale of the problem and as a result were not co-ordinating services.
